Western & Wales Emerging Talent enjoy day of team building

Our Emerging Talent cohort travelled from all corners of the Western & Wales region to St Fagans National History Museum for a day of team building.

The day saw our future leaders work together to tackle a range of construction-themed challenges; all set within the grounds of St Fagans near Cardiff – a venue that Kier played a major part in revamping over a decade ago.

The day also included several thought-provoking presentations with key themes including transferable skills, externalisation, and a reminder that careers are not always linear.

We were joined by Cat Griffith-Williams, CEO of Constructing Excellence Wales, and Julie Holmes, head of capital projects at Museum Wales, who both delivered inspiring presentations on their varied career journeys.

Heol Goffa Careers event
Overview
The Kier team were delighted to attend Ysgol Heol Goffa Careers morning last week!

We set up a series of hands‑on taster sessions to give pupils a real feel for what different construction trades involve. Pupils had the chance to try their hand at sanding wood, screwing in nails using a range of tools, excavating sand and small rocks from one container to another, carefully meeting the level line just like on a real site, and even brick laying using foam bricks to practice placement and alignment. We loved taking questions from pupils and

It was a fully immersive, sensory experience where pupils could touch, smell, feel and explore materials such as sawdust, sandpaper, tools, foam bricks and more. The aim was to spark curiosity, build confidence, and give them a practical insight into the world of construction.

A huge thank you to the Heol Goffa team for welcoming us, your pupils were so engaged and just fantastic! We loved being part of such an inspiring day!

Kier Construction’s Heronsbridge Meet The Buyer
This month, Kier Construction hosted a Meet the Buyer event in partnership with Business Wales, in preparation for the upcoming Heronsbridge School project in Bridgend.

Delivered for Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC), the Heronsbridge School project will see the existing school which supports pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD), and autism, relocate from its current site to a new local location.

BCBC has confirmed that the proposals will increase the number of places available for children with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) and introduce a range of enhanced facilities. These include the potential for a swimming pool, library, and coffee shop.

Procured through the SEWSCAP framework, the project will also deliver two five-bedroom residential care buildings, along with a replacement care facility for the existing Harwood House, currently located within the grounds of Heronsbridge School.

The Meet the Buyer event attracted over 30 local supply chain partners, all expressing strong interest in working with Kier on the project, which is due to commence in 2026/27.Hosted in the conservatory of the existing school, the venue provided an opportunity for prospective suppliers to gain a first-hand understanding of the school’s values and ethos, clearly reflected throughout the setting.

The event also welcomed local charity partners, Lads and Dads, reinforcing Kier’s ongoing commitment to supporting community causes. A diverse range of local businesses within a 10-mile radius attended, representing sectors such as plant hire, pest control, steel manufacturing, waste management, landscaping, and more. These businesses made a strong impression on Kier’s commercial and design teams, with several opportunities for follow-up discussions identified. Engagement with a number of these suppliers has continued following the event.
