Welcome to our January Newsletter

Welcome to our first newsletter of 2026. A year that promises to be one of the most significant for the Welsh built environment in over a decade. As we hit the ground running, the upcoming Welsh Parliament elections will shape the policy landscape we work within, and we are making sure the voice of our sector is not just heard but firmly placed at centre stage. Our sector manifesto is now entering its final stages, and we are working tirelessly to ensure the next Welsh Government recognises the built environment as a cornerstone of Wales’ economic, social and environmental ambitions.

Collaboration will continue to define everything we do. We are already working closely with SEWSCAP and framework contractors to advance proportionate risk allocation, a critical step in ensuring fairness, resilience and healthier project outcomes for all parties involved.

In parallel, we have begun a major fact finding exercise with the education construction supply chain, investigating the current market position of steel. With questions emerging around imported European steel, whether it is genuinely EAF low carbon and whether it is truly more cost effective than UK non EAF steel, this work will provide clarity during a time when carbon, cost and supply chain integrity matter more than ever. If you have any information you can pass onto us, then we would be grateful.

Our commitment to driving forward the Built Environment Mission Statement is also gathering momentum. The newly established steering group now has its terms of reference agreed, giving us a clear mandate to push forward the systemic changes required across procurement, skills, carbon, innovation, and delivery culture.

We have submitted our Pipeline Visibility Draft Recommendations Paper to Welsh Government and eagerly await the internal review. Pipeline visibility remains one of the most powerful levers for improving productivity, investment confidence and whole life performance and we are proud to be shaping this national conversation.

This year also marks the return of our two Built Environment Summits. One in North Wales and one in South Wales, where we will bring together leaders, practitioners and innovators to set a united vision for the future of Welsh construction. Dates will be announced shortly, so please keep an eye out and get involved.

And finally, 2026 is a milestone celebration for us: the 20th anniversary of the CEW Awards. For two decades, these awards have showcased the people, projects and organisations who embody collaboration, best practice and excellence. Entries are now open, so whether you are highlighting a transformative project or celebrating the talent within your team, we want to hear from you and eagerly await your entries!

Members – Thank you for your continued support and commitment. Together, we have a pivotal year ahead one where we influence policy, strengthen our industry, champion best practice, and celebrate success across Wales. As always. we look forward to working with you as we shape the next era of the Welsh built environment together.
