South Wales Training Academy support workers from the Ffos-y-Fran Restoration Scheme in Merthyr Tydfil
The Construction Hub Academy recently conducted several training days at the now-closed Ffos-y-Fran site. Following discussions with Merthyr (South Wales) Limited, options were explored on how the plant training company could assist not only with funding but also with upskilling and retraining for future jobs in construction.
The Ffos-y-Fran restoration scheme was the largest of its kind in the UK and opened back in 2007. The scheme extracted coal as part of a restoration process, just outside Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales. The site was a major employer in the area, with around 180 direct and indirect employees and members of staff.
As an accredited business to train both NPORS and CPCS the Academy can provide access to securing CSCS cards and offered training support with all plant, construction, and groundworks training.
Several staff from the restoration scheme enrolled on NVQ courses to progress to a “CSCS blue card” which is a skilled worker card providing proof that individuals working on construction sites have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job they do on site.
The Academy also scheduled specific training courses at the Merthyr site which are funded via the Personal Learning Account (PLA) route in association with NPTC Group of Colleges, which is one of the largest education providers in Wales.
Chris Barber, Operations Manager of Merthyr (South Wales) Limited commented “We are committed to working in partnership with The Construction Hub Academy to deliver a training programme to upskill our workforce as they seek new workplace opportunities”.
Chris Rosser, Director at The Construction Hub Academy, commented “We are also in discussions with several employers who are currently looking for reliable experienced staff and can help facilitate applicable introductions. We are delighted to offer assistance and support in delivering training and additional qualifications that can ensure future employment opportunities.”
