Porth Transportation Hub - Client: Rhondda Cynon Taff
Encon Construction are pleased to showcase their recently completed project – Porth Transportation Hub. The project has seen the pre-existing railway station rejuvenated into a modern and accessible transport centre for locals and visitors.
A fully integrated bus and rail interchange has been introduced along with a range of additional features designed to make travel in and out of the town more consistent and comfortable. The site scheme is a huge improvement on what preceded it, exhibiting functionality and stylistic design as well as providing a seamless bus and rail interchange. Its curved concourse ceiling and soffits on the station’s exterior and platforms are features which will certainly catch the public’s attention, and the soffits double as temporary overhead cover for when the weather turns sour.
In addition to improving links between the railway and the bus network, a taxi rank and cycle stores have been integrated into the build to better facilitate passenger travel from the hub irrespective of their means of transport. One of the biggest aspects of the project is the Station Quarter, a new space for passengers to feel comfortable and relaxed while they wait for their train or arrange other transport. Specialized Changing Places WC facilities have also been provided to ensure the building is as inclusive as possible. The project makes a huge difference to the efficiency of public transport in Porth, which is strategically situated as a gateway to both the Rhondda Fach and Fawr. It has been built in advance of high frequency fast trains, which will run four times an hour in Porth via the South Wales Metro from 2024.
