Pollution prevention in construction - NRW

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has seen an increase in reports of pollution from housing construction sites across North East Wales in recent years. This pollution often involves silt-heavy runoff from sites, which can enter surface water drains and eventually flow into our river systems.

The impacts of this type of pollution are extensive. Sediment buildup can block watercourses, leading to flooding and erosion. Silts can also smother critical habitats, damaging ecosystems by suffocating plants, fish, and other aquatic life.

All water discharged from construction sites should be free of sediments and silts. This can be achieved through various methods, such as using filtration systems, settlement tanks, or lagoons. Good site practices can also include wheel washes, road sweepers, bunding, and cut-off trenches to prevent silt from entering watercourses directly.

The public often plays a key role in reporting pollution incidents to NRW and is deeply concerned about the effects on the local environment. Companies found causing avoidable pollution can face prosecution, heavy fines, and be required to carry out remediation work to address any damage.

NRW is eager to work together with local housing developers on ongoing or future projects. For assistance, please contact our communication centre at 0300 065 3000 and ask to speak with a member of your local Environment Team.
