Curtis joined Tilbury Douglas in August 2023 and has quickly established himself as a highly capable and dependable member of the preconstruction team. His role is multifaceted, combining technical precision with analytical rigour and strong collaboration skills.
Curtis plays a central role in preparing tender documentation, undertaking take-offs, issuing enquiries, and scrutinising tender documents to extract critical information. He is responsible for verifying drawings against quotes and Bills of Quantities, setting up estimating software, and ensuring pricing packages are accurate and compliant. These responsibilities require a high level of attention to detail and technical understanding.
Beyond his core technical duties, Curtis acts as a bridge between operational excellence and team development. His work on developing an in-depth subcontractor supply chain schedule — which involved detailed research into historical tenders — earned him a place on the management team leading this initiative. His proactive contributions were recognised at a recent Supply Chain Conference, reflecting the value placed on his insights and approach.
Alongside his professional role, Curtis is pursuing a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Quantity Surveying at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. Despite balancing academic commitments, a home renovation, and wider personal challenges, he consistently achieves top academic results while maintaining a high standard of performance at work.
As noted by Andrew Gibbons, Regional Estimating Manager:
“Curtis exceeds expectations with technical excellence, continuous learning, and heartfelt service. From identifying critical issues in tenders to organising CPDs and volunteering, he embodies the spirit of ‘Above & Beyond.’”

Curtis consistently operates beyond the boundaries of his defined role. He proactively researches planning details for tenders, identifying risks such as Dŵr Cymru objections and potential listed monument constraints that could significantly impact project viability. During his NEC4 training, he independently identified pricing discrepancies in preconstruction contracts, demonstrating a strong grasp of contractual and commercial principles.
Rather than waiting for direction, Curtis independently developed a comprehensive supply chain tracker. This tool monitors subcontractor returns, flags areas of concern, and maps geographical coverage, enabling the team to proactively address gaps and risks within the supply chain.
Curtis has a strong appetite for learning and consistently seeks to expand his knowledge. He actively participates in construction-related research, organises and attends CPD sessions, and mentors both peers and work experience students on academic best practices and tender processes.
His ability to ask thoughtful, incisive questions enhances not only his own understanding but also that of those around him. This was highlighted by Jasmine, a work experience student, who commented:
“Curtis has been extremely helpful in explaining each stage of the tender process.”
Outside of his core responsibilities, Curtis is deeply committed to voluntary and community initiatives. He supports work experience candidates through hands-on mentoring, volunteers at charity football matches, career events, and mock interviews, and plays an active role in the Charity Committee.
Recently, Curtis supported the Social Value Manager in delivering a construction-related maths lesson at Brynmawr Comprehensive School, demonstrating his willingness to engage with education and inspire future talent. He also regularly organises team socials, CPDs, and initiatives that strengthen collaboration between internal teams and the supply chain.
