The first event will take place at the Copperworks (Penderyn) at 1.30pm. Consisting of a presentation and tour.

Summary of the project: The lower Swansea Valley was once the world-leading centre for copper smelting in the 18th Century and was the world’s largest Copperworks in the later 19th century. In 1980 the canteen closed its doors for the last time, and suffered significant damage from fire and vandalism in the decades to follow. In 2020 Swansea Council, with the support of National Lottery Heritage Fund grant, and Welsh Government funding progressed with a restoration project to Grade 2 listed former Canteen building, new build visitor centre, new build connecting link walkway to the Grade 2 listed Rolling Mill. In 2023 the restoration was completed and Penderyn Whisky as end tenants, completed their fit out and launched the site as their 3rd distillery in Wales in July 2023. The restoration project also included the Porters Lodge and Weighbridge Office.

The second event will be held at the Palace Theatre at 3.30pm

Summary of the project: The Grade 2 Listed Palace Theatre, Wales’ oldest surviving theatre, recognisable for its distinctive wedge shape was built in 1888. The building has seen many uses over its lifetime, as a Theatre, Bingo Hall, Cinema to name a few, but in its final years was a nightclub. In 2007 the doors were closed and remained closed. The building was in private ownership and was in need of significant investment. Swansea Council purchased the building in 2020; and with the support of Welsh Government funding, design plans emerged to sensitively convert it into offices, with the ability to hold small scale performances and maintain a flexible use, but importantly maintaining the theatre at its core. Works commenced in late 2021 and are scheduled to complete in December 2023. The Building was on the Theatre’s at risk register but successfully removed in early 2023 as a result of the works planned.
