Right across Wales, there are works required to nearly ½ million traditionally built houses and buildings, to ensure their continued use within the built environment – for the sake of the buildings themselves and the people of Wales that occupy them. By improving our knowledge of these buildings constructed with solid masonry walls, before 1919, we will be able to properly and safely improve them. Ensuring that architects, surveyors, contractors and small builders understand that the traditional housing stock cannot be treated the same way as their modern counterparts as this can often have severe unintended consequences, affecting both the occupiers and reputation.

Colin King of BRE, John Edwards of Edwards Hart and Constructing Excellence in Wales are on the road to show the country and industry what is needed and how to take a holistic approach. To identify the many other ways in which buildings can be made more energy efficient and sustainable before contemplating retrofit, which will include the latest research findings from BRE on Unintended Consequences, and Heat Loss, undertaken for DECC, including  their cause and effect, and how to reduce the risk.

John Edwards, Director of Edwards Hart said : "It's a huge mistake to jump in and retrofit without first properly understanding the building and its condition".
