Industry Data
Welsh Government funds more than 50% of construction activity in Wales (Value Wales, 2009). This presents a huge opportunity for the collection of waste data.
Introduction
By working with the Welsh Government’s construction supply chain to build upon current data requirements, CEW aims to obtain waste data on a significant proportion of Wales’ construction output.
Data collected throughout the construction phase of projects will provide an evidence based real time understanding on the performance of each project against waste targets.
A Wales-wide database of construction waste data for a range of projects will be established. This will enable industry benchmarks and targets to be set for similar projects helping to improve resource efficiencies. In addition, CEWs waste app will also enable data collection for smaller organisations that make up the vast majority of Welsh construction businesses.
Our targets for this project are as follows:
Outputs | Number | Schedule |
---|---|---|
Development of database | 1 | Year 1 Q3 & Q4 |
Number of projects on database | 10 50 |
Year 2 |
benchmarks | By project type | Year 3 Q4 |
Data reports | 2 |
Year 2 Q4 |

Waste App
Constructing Excellence in Wales has launched a free iPhone app to help divert waste from landfill when builders and trades people carry out renovation and repairs for homeowners. Called Skip Advisor, the app gives advice on what their responsibilities are, estimates how much waste each project will generate and highlights where to find Green Compass waste management companies across Wales.
The app also has a useful project estimator which lets users assess how much waste a renovation / new build is likely to generate so that skip disposal can be allowed for before work begins. Best practice guidance is also available on the app.
